Musings on maternal sensory overwhelm

A lot of the time i see posts about surrending to the mess in postpartum and parenting, and whilst i agree with this staement in some ways, i don’t agree with it entirely.

Let me tell you why and what i feel.

If mess overwhelms you, it matters. If clutter adds to your sensory overload then it matters.

Yes it all depends on the person, just like most things in life. However, i have found that this statement puts people like myself ( who are deeply influenced by their enviroment and space) under more pressure to change and instils feelings of shame and judgement when we struggle to do so, or just simply can’t.

Yes it’s crucial to prioritise rest, bonding and healing when becoming a mum. Some surrending and mindset shifts are necessary, but not from a place of ‘shoulds’ that comes at us from outside opinions.

So if you are someone like me, then your space feeling less overwhelming matters too.
